June 2024 Passenger Demand Up 9.1%-IATA

Africa leads in load factor improvement

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a 9.1% year-on-year increase in total passenger demand (in RPKs) for June 2024.

International demand rose 12.3% compared to June 2023, with a 12.7% year-on-year increase in capacity. The load factor improved to 85.0%, up by 0.3 percentage points from June 2023.

Domestic demand rose 4.3% compared to June 2023; capacity was up 2.1% year-on-year and the load factor was 85.0% (+1.7ppt compared to June 2023).

Middle East

Middle Eastern airlines witnessed a 9.6% uptick in demand compared to June 2023, with a load factor of 79.7% and a 9.4% increase in capacity year-on-year.

Africa 

African airlines saw a 16.9% year-on-year increase in demand. Capacity was up 5.8% year-on-year. The load factor rose to 77.0% (+7.4ppt compared to June 2023) – marking the largest improvement in load factor among all regions.

Market Share

The Middle East commanded a 9.4% share of the global passenger traffic market in 2023, while Africa held a 2.1% share.
