Africa Travellers Prioritise Convenience When Choosing Airports – IATA
Convenience and speed are key priorities for African and Middle Eastern travellers, reveals IATA's 2024 Global Passenger Survey.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled the findings from its 2024 Global Passenger Survey, highlighting that convenience and speed are paramount for travellers globally.
The survey reveals that many passengers are eager to use biometric identification and complete travel processes ahead of time to ensure a smoother experience.
Regional Trends-MEA Region
Africa:
Africa travellers prioritise convenience when choosing an airport but often face limited options due to a lack of alternatives, according to IATA.
More travellers in this region book tickets through travel agents than any other area. They show a stronger interest in digital solutions and technology to streamline travel processes.
Additionally, complex visa requirements remain a significant deterrent compared to other regions.
Middle Eastern:
Middle Eastern passengers are the most likely to choose an airport for its facilities and services.
A higher percentage book flights through channels involving human interaction compared to other regions. They are enthusiastic about using smartphones to store digital wallets, digital passports, and loyalty cards for booking, payment, and navigation at airports.
Over half have used biometrics instead of passports for airport processes in the past 12 months, with nearly all reporting satisfaction with the experience.
“Passengers want flexibility and transparency when planning and booking travel, plus speed and convenience at the airport. More are embracing biometrics, digital wallets, and off-airport processes to make it happen.”
Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security.
Young Travellers Lead Digital Adoption
IATA reports that digital solutions are particularly favoured by younger generations. Under-25s are significantly more proactive in leveraging technology to improve their travel experience but seek assurances on data security.
- 51% prefer digital wallets for payments, far exceeding the global average of 20%.
- 90% are interested in using smartphones with digital wallets, passports, and loyalty cards for booking, payment, and navigation, surpassing the global average of 77%.
- 48% prefer biometrics over traditional passports and boarding passes, compared to 43% of those aged 56-75.
- 50% of under-25s would be more open to biometric solutions if assured of data security, versus the global average of 39%.
