Air Algérie (AH) has placed a landmark order for 16 ATR 72-600 aircraft, signed on July 4, 2025, in what ATR describes as the largest-ever acquisition by an African operator.

The turboprops will be operated by Domestic Airlines, a newly established regional subsidiary focused on improving connectivity across Algeria—particularly in underserved southern regions where air access is essential for economic and social development.

According to ATR, the 72-seat aircraft will be powered by PW127XT engines, offering improved fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. Deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2028.

With its low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and ability to perform in diverse environments like the Algerian climate, the ATR 72-600 is uniquely suited for low-density routes and remote regions,” said Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, CEO of ATR.

Africa’s First ATR 72 Full-Flight Simulator

The agreement also includes Africa’s first ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator, to be installed at Air Algérie’s existing training centre.

ATR notes that the simulator will enhance pilot training capacity and support the airline’s operational safety and maintenance standards.

Hamza Benhamouda, CEO of Air Algérie, added: “The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through reliable and efficient air transport.”

CEO Benhamouda further outlined—this acquisition also reflects the airline’s long-term strategy to improve domestic access, expand regional operations, and strengthen in-house training and safety standards.
