Air Tanzania (TC) has been added to the European Union’s Air Safety List, effectively banning the airline from operating within the EU.

According to the European Commission announcement on December 13, 2024, “The basis for this decision is safety concerns identified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).”

They further outlined that Air Tanzania failed to meet international safety standards, leading to the denial of a Third Country Operator (TCO) authorisation.

African Airlines Banned from EU Airspace

The EU Commission reports that following the latest update, a total of 129 airlines are banned from EU skies.

100 airlines certified in 15 states are on the list “due to inadequate safety oversight by the aviation authorities from these states.”

The African region accounts for 11 of these states: Angola (except two airlines), Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Liberia, Libya, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, and Sudan.

Two individual airlines from the African region are listed, “based on serious safety deficiencies identified,” including Air Tanzania (Tanzania) and Air Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe).

EU Commissioner Calls for Immediate Action

We strongly urge Air Tanzania to take swift and decisive action to address these safety issues,” stated Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

I have offered the Commission’s assistance to the Tanzanian authorities in enhancing Air Tanzania’s safety performance and achieving full compliance with international aviation standards.”

The EU Commission notes that, decisions under the EU Air Safety List are based on international safety standards, and notably the standards decreed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
