The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded the Airbus A321XLR powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines with Type Certification, as announced on February 21, 2025.

This development follows the certification of the CFM LEAP-1A powered A321XLR in July 2024 and paves the way for the first customer aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines to enter service later this year.

A321XLR on Efficiency and Sustainability

According to Christian Scherer, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, the A321XLR “already displays its great versatility crossing the Atlantic in daily operations.” He added, “With the certification and entry-into-service of the GTF-powered A321XLR we will see more operators introduce this game-changing aircraft.”

Airbus claims that the A321XLR burns 30% less fuel per seat than previous generation competitor aircraft, citing this as a key benefit for airlines seeking to reduce their environmental impact.

The A321XLR is designed to offer flexibility to airlines, allowing it to operate alongside widebody aircraft in their fleets.

Airbus notes that this versatility enables airlines to add capacity, open new routes, or adjust their operations in response to changing demand.
