Ethiopia Launches First Electronic Passport
First E-passport enhances travel documentation and security with modern tech

Ethiopia has officially introduced its first electronic passport (E-passport), launched at a ceremony in Addis Ababa on February 21, 2025.
The E-passport initiative was spearheaded by Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C., marking the country’s efforts to modernize its travel documentation system.
Key Features of the E-Passport
ICS Ethiopia outlined some of the new E-passport features:
- Biometric Technology: Integrating biometric data to ensure secure identification
- Advanced Encryption: Protecting sensitive information with robust encryption methods
- Tamper-Proof Materials: Preventing unauthorized alterations or forgery
Reinforcing Borders, Elevating Global Reputation
According to Selamwit Dawit, CEO of Immigration and Citizenship Services, the E-passport will “significantly enhance the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control.”
Dr. Brook Taye, CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, emphasized the project’s strategic importance, stating that it “demonstrates our commitment to advancing strategic national projects that drive modernization and efficiency.“
