Ethiopian Airlines Inks Deal for Design of Mega Airport

Abusera Mega Airport City to handle 110 million passengers annually.

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) has inked a technical advisory and consultancy contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners), to design and supervise a new mega airport city located approximately 40 kilometres from Addis Ababa Bole Airport, in Abusera, Ethiopia. 

This mega airport project is poised to become Africa’s largest hub with the capacity to accommodate 110 million passengers annually.

This five-year endeavour will be executed in two phases. The initial phase, projected to cost $6 billion, will enable the airport to handle 60 million passengers annually with two parallel runways, upon completion in 2029.

The money will come through loans and there are already companies that already showed interest,” stated Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew during a briefing on August 9, 2024.

  • Terminal Size: Features a 1.1 million sqm terminal for passengers.

  • Cargo and Support: Offers over 100,000 sqm of cargo and airport support facilities.
  • Infrastructure: Includes an associated airfield and other essential airport infrastructure.
