Ethiopian Airlines Orders Up to 20 Boeing 777X Jets

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) and Boeing announced an agreement on March 5, 2024, for the purchase of eight 777-9 passenger aircraft, with the option for an additional 12. This deal makes Ethiopian Airlines the first Boeing 777X customer in Africa.

Expanded Range Opens New Routes 

Boeing has acknowledged the 777-9’s range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles) and capabilities directly supporting Ethiopian Airlines’ ambitious plans to expand its fleet, reach new markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, and enhance its overall capacity for passengers and cargo.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, highlighted the 777-9’s potential for “more flexibility, reduced fuel consumption, and carbon emissions,” ultimately improving operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Currently, over half of Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet consists of Boeing aircraft, including 29 787 Dreamliners, 20 777s, 3 767s, 27 Next-Generation 737s, and 15 737 MAX jets
