The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that it concluded its inaugural World Data Symposium (WDS), held between February 27 and 29, 2025, in Dublin, Ireland. The event reached a broad consensus on three key priorities:

  1. Use Data Intensely: Enhancing efficiency, passenger experience, and sustainability through AI and predictive analytics. Establish clear data ownership, invest in solutions, and attract talent.
  2. Innovate Technology Integration: Implementing cloud computing, automation, and digital identity to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Modernise standards to ensure seamless passenger journeys.
  3. Build Cyber Resilience: Strengthening cybersecurity measures as technology usage grows. Efficiently share information to protect critical infrastructure, ensure data integrity, and safeguard passenger trust.

Collaborative Efforts in Aviation

Kim Macaulay, IATA’s Chief Information and Data Officer, stated that the event highlighted the importance of collaboration in enhancing travel and shipping experiences.

The symposium demonstrated the potential benefits of collaboration across the aviation value chain. “With so much potential evolving every day, it will not be our last,” Macaulay added.

AI and Digital Identity in Aviation

IATA revealed three proof-of-concept programs:

  1. Cargo Acceptance Process: Using a large language model (LLM) to manage regulatory compliance, reduce waste, and optimise cargo space.
  2. Agency Onboarding: Implementing digital employee IDs to reduce onboarding time and fraud potential, from seven business days to seven seconds.
  3. Passenger Entitlements: Combining digital identity credentials for automated processes like lounge and onboard access, simplifying regulatory checks.

Macaulay emphasised the transformative potential of AI and digital identity in aviation, underscoring the industry’s commitment to innovation and collaboration.
