Mauritius, Morocco, and Tanzania lead in UNWTO’s 2023 tourism receipts.
The latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer (Nov 2023) reveals the best-performing destinations in international tourism receipts from January to September 2023 – with the performance measured as a percentage change compared to the same period in 2019.
African Destinations Excel in Tourism Receipts
Four destinations from the African region namely, Mauritius (+35%), Morocco (+33%), Tanzania (+26%), and Egypt (+26%) – have shown significant performance in the first 8 or 9 months of 2023.
Pakistan, the leading performing destination in tourism receipts for the same period, has achieved +92%.
Tourism Receipts on the Rise
According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, tourism receipts could reach USD 1.4 trillion in 2023 – about 93% of the USD 1.5 trillion earned by destinations in 2019.
International Arrivals Nearing Pre-Pandemic Levels
The report highlights that between January and September 2023 – 975 million tourists travelled internationally.
The overall international arrivals are predicted to reach 1.3 billion in 2023, close to 90% of pre-pandemic levels.
The UNWTO predicts international tourism will recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2024 despite economic challenges and uncertainty derived from certain geopolitical tensions and conflicts.
