National Airways Corporation (NAC) has confirmed that one of its Beechcraft 1900D aircraft (registration ZS-JAG) “came under terrorist attack yesterday the 17th of September 2024, whilst on the ground in Bamako, Mali.”

Crew and Safety

NAC stated, “our crew and all personnel are unharmed and in a remote safe house,” despite the militant action being “very localised around the Gendarmerie, and Faladie areas as well as the international airport.”

Damage and Impact

NAC expressed deep regret over the damage and destruction of its assets in Mali, where the company was conducting humanitarian work “under the auspices, approval, markings, and flag of the World Food Program (WFP).”

The attack reportedly damaged other aircraft, including “a Bombardier Dash 8, Presidential Boeing, Air Mali Boeing, various hangars, much ground equipment, and the terminal building.”

Response and Recovery

NAC noted that “this does not appear to be a deliberate attack on NAC or the WFP.”

Further outlining, “the Mali military managed to quell this event effectively, claiming to have captured certain of the terrorists, and the airport is now open and functional again.”

NAC emphasised that “the safety of our crew is paramount,” and, in collaboration with the WFP, will seek answers from the authorities to ensure a safe operating environment.
