Nigerian airlines suspended plans to ground domestic and regional flights planned from Monday, May 09, 2022 – in the wake of the high cost of aviation fuel impacting normal airline operations and profits. Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) announced the government has assured to ‘urgently intervene in the aviation fuel crisis’. AON airline members include – Aero Contractors (N2), Air Peace (P4), Arik Air (W3), Azman Air (ZQ), Dana Airlines (9J), Ibom Air (QI), MaxAir (VM), Overland Airways (OF), and United Nigeria Airlines (U5).

Over time, aviation fuel price (JetA1) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. No airline in the world can absorb this kind of sudden shock from such an astronomical rise over a short period. While aviation fuel worldwide is said to cost about 40% of an airline’s operating cost globally, the present hike has shut up Nigeria’s operating cost to about 95%.
