COP29: Implementing the Clean Energy Transition for International Aviation in Support of the UN SDGs

On 11 November 2024, the opening day of COP29, ICAO hosted a briefing session to highlight the recent progress made by ICAO and its Member States in addressing the impact of international aviation on climate change.

The session—“Implementing the Clean Energy Transition for International Aviation in Support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals” focused on concrete actions being undertaken and planned to achieve the Long-term Global Aspirational Goal (LTAG) of reaching net-zero carbon emissions for international aviation by 2050.

It also covered the implementation of the ICAO Global Framework for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF), and other cleaner aviation energies.

Highlights of the Session

The session, moderated by ICAO Secretary-General’s Envoy Jane Hupe to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, presented ICAO’s recent achievements in addressing the impact of international civil aviation on climate change.

It provided information on the work done and planned activities on the transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), and other clean aviation energies as part of the LTAG to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The session reiterated the call for stakeholders to join forces in harnessing clean energy and capacity-building for the future of aviation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
