The annual World Travel Awards recognised Hotel Verde Cape Town Airport as Africa’s Leading Green Hotel for 2024.

On October 18, tourism and travel leaders gathered in Diani Beach, Kenya, for the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony 2024.

Hotel Verde stood out among its peers, exemplifying the “stellar examples of tourism excellence” that Graham Cooke, Founder of World Travel Awards, emphasised.

According to the hotel, some of the green initiatives implemented include:

  • LEED Platinum Certification: Hotel Verde is the first hotel in Africa, and the 6th globally, to achieve LEED Platinum status for new construction, an internationally recognised green-building rating and certification system.
  • Off-the-Grid Power: Hotel Verde operates on an independent electricity system, minimising its reliance on traditional energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint.
  • Geothermal Comfort: The hotel utilises a geothermal heating and cooling system, harnessing the Earth’s natural warmth for a comfortable and eco-friendly guest experience.
  • Minimising Plastic Waste: To reduce single-use plastics, Hotel Verde provides guests with refillable glass water bottles, promoting responsible hydration and reducing plastic waste.
  • Natural Pool and Eco-Friendly Amenities: The hotel features a natural pool filtered by plants and offers eco-friendly amenities like recyclable packaging and plastic-free earbuds.
  • Energy Efficiency and Waste Reduction: Hotel Verde outlines its use of energy-efficient lighting and has a robust waste management program with a 97% recycling rate.

Hotel Verde notes it became the first hotel in Africa to offer accommodation and conferencing (2014) that is 100% carbon neutral, showcasing their long-standing commitment to sustainability.
