IATA and 123Carbon Partner to Advance Transparency in Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Collaboration to Streamline Certificate Management Across SAF Registries

The International Air Transport Association, IATA and 123Carbon have announced a strategic collaboration to develop interoperability between their respective Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries.
IATA reports, this move aims to increase transparency, avoid emissions reporting errors, and streamline certificate management across SAF registries.
The collaboration will focus on three key elements:
- Unique Identifier—Developing a unique identifier and aligning relevant data points to exchange between registries.
- Double Issuance Prevention—Creating a process for exchanging information to avoid potential double issuance.
- Dispute Resolution—Establishing a dispute resolution process.
Building Trust and Transparency in SAF Registries
Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasised the importance of user trust and transparency in ensuring the effective functioning of SAF registries.
She welcomed all entities active in this field to join the initiative towards global interoperability.
Jeroen van Heiningen, Managing Director of 123Carbon, highlighted the company’s commitment to establishing integrity and trust in the market for Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs).
He noted that the collaboration with IATA allows SAF providers, airlines, freight forwarders, and corporate entities to utilize their platforms without concerns over double issuance.
IATA SAF Registry
The IATA SAF Registry is set to launch in April 2025, notes IATA, aiming to facilitate the broadest possible use of SAF in aviation’s decarbonisation by standardising the market for SAF certificates.
