The Lufthansa Group is expanding its Green Fares program to its global network, covering over 850,000 flights per year starting December 4, 2024, after a successful test run on selected intercontinental routes.

Initially launched in February 2023, Lufthansa was the first airline group to introduce Green Fares, allowing passengers to contribute to a more sustainable aviation future.

Green Fares are available for all travel classes on flights operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, and Air Dolomiti (with some exceptions for code-share flights). Eurowings also offers a similar program called PlanetBlu.

Early Success and Measurable Impact

Lufthansa reports that since its launch, over two million passengers have chosen this option, collectively offsetting nearly 190,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This milestone figure equates to the CO2 emissions generated by over 1,300 flights from Munich to New York using an Airbus A350.

Expanding Sustainable Travel

Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology Officer for the Lufthansa Group, emphasises the importance of the Green Fares program:

In addition to technological solutions, we are focusing on innovative offers for our customers to make flying more sustainable. With the Green Fares, we are now offering a solution worldwide that shows that more sustainable flying is already a reality today, also through the use of SAF. We will continue to lead the way in transforming the industry.”

Additional Options for CO2 Offsetting

The Group offers CO2 offsetting options for other fares throughout the booking process, even allowing customers to offset emissions after their flight. Lufthansa states that currently, around four percent of passengers choose one of these options for more sustainable flying.

What’s Behind the Green Fare Tariff

According to Lufthansa, the Green Fare program simplifies sustainable travel. By selecting this option, passengers can contribute directly to CO2 reduction through a combination of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and high-quality climate protection projects by the company.

The specific mix of SAF and project contributions varies depending on the flight distance. For European and North African routes, 20% of CO2 emissions are reduced with SAF, with the remaining 80% offset through climate protection projects. For long-haul flights, the split is 10% SAF and 90% climate projects.
