Calls for sustainable aviation practices at the 2024 summit.
Minister Barbara Creecy, South Africa’s Minister of Transport, officially opened the 2024 Aviation Africa Summit with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
In her remarks, she addressed the urgent need for the aviation sector to reduce its environmental impact.
Proactive Measures for a Greener Future
Minister Creecy stressed the importance of investing in and developing green technologies to minimise the aviation sector’s carbon footprint.
“Our aviation sector faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, and it is our responsibility to address these challenges proactively,” she stated.
She highlighted the exploration of alternative fuels as a critical step towards supporting the growth of aviation without compromising the planet’s health.
Global Commitment to Net-Zero Emissions
Referencing the 41st ICAO General Assembly resolutions from 2022, Minister Creecy underscored the global commitment to achieving net-zero carbon offsetting emission targets by 2050.
“The 41st ICAO General Assembly resolutions highlighted the global commitment to the net-zero carbon offsetting emission targets by 2050 within the aviation sector,” she noted.
She emphasised that South Africa, through the SACAA, has been actively participating in this initiative since 2018, assisting neighbouring states through the ‘buddy system’ of the program.
As the 42nd Assembly approaches next year, Minister Creecy called for a reaffirmation of dedication and direction towards these sustainability goals, not just for South Africa but for the entire African continent.
