United Airlines (UA) has introduced a special sustainability-themed livery on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

This 787 Dreamliner got the special livery treatment to help us spread the word about sustainable aviation fuel (SAF),” stated United.

They believe that “‘The Future is SAF’ reflects the most promising technology solution to reduce our carbon emissions and will be a critical component in meeting our climate ambitions.”

United CEO Scott Kirby emphasises raising awareness about sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), noting, “the industry is still in its infancy, [SAF] supply is limited, and most people don’t know what it is.”

The U.S. carrier highlighted the choice of the aircraft to feature the livery, as it is the most fuel-efficient widebody in their fleet, using 20-25% less fuel than other aircraft in its class with 25% fewer emissions.

According to United, SAF accounts for less than 0.1% of their overall fuel use.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel – SAF

SAF is an alternative to conventional jet fuel that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% on a lifecycle basis – from production to end use – because it is made from renewable materials rather than oil.

United was the first airline to set a goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, without relying on voluntary carbon offsets, and remains a U.S. industry leader in the purchase and use of SAF.

In 2023, the airline purchased more sustainable fuel than any other U.S. airline and has used a blend of SAF at five airports in the U.S. and Europe, including San Francisco International Airport – among the most locations of any U.S. airline.
