Rwanda and Malawi Sign Bilateral Air Services Agreement
Enhancing connectivity and boosting economic growth through air travel cooperation.
Rwanda and Malawi have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to enhance regional connectivity and foster economic growth.
The agreement, signed in October 2024 and presided over by Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Dr. Jimmy Gasore, will facilitate air travel between the two countries, boosting trade and business ties.
Through the establishment of this framework, Rwanda and Malawi aim to open and connect markets, promoting seamless trade and enabling their citizens to participate in broader supply chains.
Enhancing Airline Operations and Air Transport Liberalisation
The bilateral agreement allows designated airlines from each country to operate predictably, providing travellers with expanded choices and reliable air services.
Minister Gasore highlighted the BASA’s role in creating a solid foundation for airlines to operate services between the two nations. The agreement aligns with the Yamoussoukro Decision, which aims to liberalise air transport in Africa. “This YD-compliant agreement creates a solid foundation for our airlines to operate air transport services.”
Both countries have committed to expediting the ratification process to ensure the timely implementation of the BASA. This collaborative effort highlights the shared vision of Rwanda and Malawi to strengthen regional integration and unlock new opportunities for their citizens.
