South African Airways (SA) has announced the suspension of its operations to Malawi, citing ‘recent economic challenges in Malawi’. The airline will discontinue its service on this route effective from November 30, 2023.

In a statement, SAA CEO, Prof John Lamola, stated, “This move should not be interpreted as a step back from the airline’s commitment to serving the people of Malawi and promoting trade links between South Africa and Malawi. We will continue to monitor the situation and remain open to resuming the route to Malawi as soon as the situation warrants the viability of financially efficient operations from this route.”

South African Airways had resumed flights to Malawi in March 2023, operating a triangular schedule – O.R. Tambo Johannesburg – Blantyre – Lilongwe and back to Johannesburg.
